Where are you 'really' from?

People of colour are often asked this question when someone is dissatisfied with your answer to the original query, ‘where are you from’. It suggests that your response was dishonest, and that the questioner is looking for information that backs up their view that you’re an ‘other’. This medal is designed to allow artists of colour to tell their own origin story.

This medal should provoke discomfort, the way the question ‘where are you from’ does. The negative space highlights the subtext behind the word ‘really’. The question ‘where are you from?’ is debossed to solidify its normality, with a gap suggesting something unspoken, and the out of place ‘really’ on the reverse embossed to make it deliberately conspicuous.
